The night was warm and still, with only the slightest breeze. The sky was a cloudless canopy of dark and velvety blue, interspersed with the perfect pin pricks of diamond that were the stars. Below this ceiling rested the land, dimly outlined by the light of the moon. The land under this particular sky broad and open, with some small patches of wood and a smooth and winding river. Much of this land was empty, but there were farms and orchards, and a small village of fifty-three people.
